The first LED street lamps in Bangalore offer better aesthetics as well as saving 70 per cent of the energy and money burned by conventional sodium/mercury lights
New Delhi -- 24 December, 2009 -- A row of 24 brand new street lamps equipped with LEDs supplied by Avnet Electronics Marketing India is now saving 10th Main Street in Bangalore's Sadashivnagar neighbourhood up to 70 per cent of the energy and money burned by conventional lights. These are the first LED street lamps installed in Bangalore.
Installed by Avnet India's customer, Onleo Global Solutions, the LED lights last 8 to 10 years compared to the average six months for a sodium/mercury bulb. The new LED lights use just 100W of power as opposed to the 250W that non-LED lights consume.
Cary Eskow, director, LightSpeed of Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, believes that energy efficient LED lighting could help India to achieve the voluntary 20-25% carbon reduction commitment made by minister of state for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh in the run up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen 2009.
"Earlier this month, the McKinsey consultancy made headlines when it said more energy-efficient cars, lighting and buildings are the low-hanging fruit in the global warming battle, " said Eskow, who was a keynote speaker at the India's first LED Expo which took place in New Delhi on 18-19 December. "The LED street light project is the first step. Energy efficient LED lighting, which offers even more potential for energy savings than conventional lamps, definitely has a role to play."
Like many fast growing countries, India faces the dilemma of wanting to promote growth while conserving resources and protecting the environment. Energy efficiency will be a goal that consumers are looking for, businesses are embracing and governments are actively promoting. The combination of demand and market potential is making high brightness (HB) LEDs one of the fastest growing sectors in lighting in the next few years.
"Today, entirely new generations of energy-efficient, high-brightness LEDs are appearing everywhere in applications as varied as interior/exterior architecture, specialty lighting, traffic control, channel letters, large format signage and luminaire design, as well as medical applications," explained Eskow.
"However, LED lighting is totally different from incandescent bulbs and traditional electronic industry products. LED lighting products -- especially high brightness LEDs -- cover electronics, thermal and optical technologies. This broad expertise requirement can be a barrier to entry for some manufacturers. Avnet's goal is to help customers here in India enjoy the benefits of energy efficiency as well as illumination," said Ramani Sundaresan, country head, Avnet Electronics Marketing, India.
Exhibiting at LED Expo, Avnet Electronics Marketing, the leading electronics component distributor in India, launched three initiatives to create added values in design chain which includes:
• Promoting energy saving technology -- Offering brands that provide energy saving lighting component products and helping customers engage with the new brands.
• Providing total solutions -- Leveraging a broad array of product franchise, Avnet integrates different components into total solutions to customers. Benefits include faster time-to-market, reduced energy costs for end-users and a lighter overall environmental impact.
• Offering reference and turnkey LED system designs -- Avnet Design Services' LED experts support lighting customers right from the concept to post-production stages by providing designs and consultancy to help them produce successful products.
Avnet Electronics Marketing's design unit, Avnet Design Services (ADS), has six design centers within Asia -- in locations such as India, China, Singapore and Taiwan -- each with strong system design capability to provide value-added design services to Avnet's customers and suppliers in the region. It has already developed proven reference solutions ranging from general illumination such as street lamps and architectural to advertising lighting.
ADS works closely with Avnet's LightSpeed unit which specializes in accelerating innovative HBLED LED applications by providing in-depth technical insight and solutions for HBLED light sources, advanced thermal management, power driver stage and secondary optics.
