All Net Proceeds to Benefit Spark of Hope
Phoenix, Ariz. -- Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading global technology distributor, has announced that a record 36 Valley-area businesses will compete head-to-head in Avnet’s 7th Annual 16-Inch B2B (Business-to-Business) Softball Desert Classic tournament on Saturday, November 14. Many Valley CEOs will participate in this year’s event. Roy Vallee from Avnet, Doug Parker from US Airways, Brad Casper from the Dial Corporation, Stephen Dow from Emerson, Andy McCain from Hensley and Chuck Vermillion from OneNeck, among others, are expected to compete as part of their company’s teams.
“We have approximately 500 people signed up and 15 CEOs playing in this year’s big game vs. XTRA Sports 910’s radio celebrities,” said tournament organizer and Avnet Chief Communications Officer Al Maag. “It’s about fun, networking, employee morale and helping needy children -- a grand slam.”
The 16-inch softball classic is one of Avnet’s key annual community outreach programs, attracting more than 750-1000 players and fans.
All net proceeds will benefit Spark of Hope, a Tempe-based organization that focuses on providing assistance directly to disabled children and their families who are not supported by traditional charitable programs.
“There are not a lot of events that can bring so many local businesses together, especially one that benefits one charity,” said Ensynch President and CEO, Gene Holmquist. “It’s an opportunity for our coworkers to give back while also having the chance to meet other Valley professionals.”
The first-place co-ed team and men’s team will win Phoenix Coyote suite tickets; second-place teams will each win a $25 gift certificate for every team member to Don and Charlie’s, a local Scottsdale restaurant.
The games will be played at the Tempe Sports Complex and the championship game will be broadcast on Avnet’s web based video network, Avnet OnDemand , December 7 at www.avnetondemand.com.
Hensley is donating beverages, Vienna Chicago hot dogs will be served and Avnet will have a children’s area that will include face painting, animal balloons and other events.
Tournament sponsors are: SCF Arizona, Ensynch and Computer Associates and the presenting sponsor is Spark Design. Also lending support: The Phoenix Sports Commission, PrismaGraphic, XTRA Sports 910AM, Brodeur Partners, Vienna Beef and BMA.
